Romance or in my case the lack of it!!!

This week Kathi has come up with 'Affairs of the heart' as the theme on Lucky Snapping 2013 .  Have to admit my heart sank when I read this for a number of reasons that I shan't go into here and now, but mainly I felt disappointed in the fact that I might not be able to partake this week, (actually finding them quite addictive!!)  My main concern re this topic is the fact that my hubby is the most unromantic man I know and over the years I have become unromantic.  So I guess my tales this week will be more about the lack of romance in my life!!  Think I shall start off by explaining the story behind my reply to Kathi's original prompt.

Mick and I had not been together long before he suggested  we got married, bit of a whirl wind romance I guess, but that is another story.  The day we got my engagment ring we went into Brent Cross Shopping Centre, London, and I pointed out the ring that I liked, which I still love today, a small ring with small diamonds, nothing flash or big - that is just not me, Mick agreed, so long as that was the one I really wanted, it was so we got it.  We went back to his place Finchley Section House and his room.  Once in there he handed me the box and said "there you go" Well I couldn't believe it so I laughed which left him with a "what?" look on his face.  I explained that it would be nice if he asked me properly and put the ring on my finger!!!!  So reluctantly  eagerly he did, on one knee as well!!  So whilst I'm all smiles and looking at my ring he has moved on and asks me for something that was in my bag, so me being me says "yeah, it's in my bag help yourself".  The next thing I know , his has my collection of store cards and credit cards (not that many possibly 6 - 10) and is bending them all in half and breaking them up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was speechless, when I questioned his actions, his reply was, "I will pay all these off and start as we mean to go on with no debts of any kind!!"  Well what could I say to that................ "gee thanks, but I am actually more than capable of paying them off myself thank you very much!!!........... hey but if you insist, carry on"

Well he did carry on bending and breaking and I have never had a credit card since or any store cards, 24 yrs down the line.  I was rather taken back by this at the time, but laugh about it now and very pleased that he did as he has taught me live within my means and hopefully we have passed this onto the girls.

Will try and add a photo of the ring tomorrow.

Here ends part one of the unromantic tales of Mick and Karen :)

  1. What a brilliant post! The romantic in me would say that he loved you so much that he just wanted to take care of you even if that was in the more practical way. I can't wait for for romantic tales!

  2. Oh Karen, I am smiling even though I probably shouldn't , though what a good call the long run... plenty of people would wish for it and not have to face the credit card statements xxx

  3. That's pretty amazing actually as some people have (rather) radical ways of doing things, LOL but as you say, it turned out pretty positive ! xxx

  6. Hi there - after being a team for a good many years me and my (now) wife got married so that I friend of ours could come on a holiday to Australia! She wanted to come out but her husband was resisting - we worked out that he would have to come if he was my best man! So we are married and our friend got a trip to Australia!

That is cutting out a good deal of the story - but it's basically true!

  9. Well, now you have given me inspiration as to what my story will be. Thank you! Your husband is not the only 'unromantic' guy around. Mine wouldn't win any awards at it. Cute story. I am looking forward to the rest.

  13. I had to laugh about the store cards. Peter actually proposed to me by accident, it just came out. We have lasted for 32 years so maybe romance is over rated.

  14. I am so so so glad that you wrote such an introduction to your post because you expressed exactly what I feel. I have huge problems what to write this week too. Your story is special, lovely and funny - it seems that the lack of real proposal is not so rare as one would think.
