What I do for a living answered!

Sorry I haven't been posting each day with the Lucky 7's challenge but I developed an absess on Monday and it has dragged me down a bit this week, plus a number of things have all come to a head this week and need sorting and there just are not enough hours in the day, days in the week for me at the moment!!!  Can't see next week being much better either lol hey ho - that is life.

A few of you have asked what I do for a living after our selfie photos last week, well put get yourself a cuppa and read on, though I shall keep it brief.

I am employed by Cornwall Council in the Education, Health and Adult Care department (though that is due to change come April - what we will be then goodness knows).  I am part of the STEPS team which stands for Short Term Enablement Planning service.  We work in the community in individuals homes for a period of up to six week and we are a free service for that time.  We go to individuals who have experienced a temporary disablement, ie through a fall, surgery, illness, strokes (though their enablement can take longer than six weeks) and have been referred to us via the hospital discharge team, adult care, or other health care professionals. We work along side physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech  and language therapists etc.  So my role and my work colleagues is to go into the individual's home and work with them to improve their mobility, build up their confidence again, show them new ways of doing their daily tasks, introducing aids if necessary,  encouraging them to do things for themselves again and promote their independence and help them to remain where they want to be - which is in their own home.  Hopefully by the end of the six weeks when we leave they have reached their goals and no longer need care, occasionally they will need some form of care which they then have to pay for but not as much as they would of needed if we hadn't gone in first.  ie they may only need three calls a week for a shower instead of every day.  We work a three week shift pattern covering the hours of 8am - 8pm Monday to Friday, 365 days a year. We work with adults only and not always the elderly, we have been working with a 25yr man recently who lost his eyesight after a car crash.  So our work varies tremendously and personally I find it very enjoyable meeting new people all the time and gaining a small insight into their life.  So that is my work in a nut shell.

So far this week I have managed two of the seven back views

My group of people consist of A and B, we went for a walk to Nare Head again Wednesday evening but did a different route, one we haven't done for a year or more maybe and I am sure somewhere I have this same photo when they were little, will have to make the effort to find it.

B pondering life.

The path we had walked down on our way back to the car.

  1. So now we know Karen! Did you train as an occupational therapist?

    1. Hi Linda, no I am not a trained occupational therapist. My initial training was beauty therapy, but have always worked with people in one way or another. We are very well trained in our current job now though. xx

    1. You are welcome Viv. It is interesting, not physically demanding - apart from the driving can get a bit much some days, it is more mentally testing when trying to encourage someone who does not want to be encouraged lol. xx
